All, this is going to sound really stupid ...

I'm a pc user and I just got a used (but very good) mac from a friend. I have a dial-up connection that I use to connect to the internet at home.

I just need a dial-up connection and I can't seem to figure out how to do that on a mac.

Does the mac have any utilities for that?
Is it built into the browser?

How do I do it. I know it cant' be that difficult (or am I just that simple)?

First of all you need the software for the dial up serfvice provider, ISP, like AOL etc. Macs used to come with an Earthlink trial but I don't know if they still do. If you use both the PC and Mac, you'll want the software for the ISP you already have so you only pay for one account.

After that, go to Apple menu/System prefs and click on. Network. Click Modem. It's easiest to just click the Assist Me button and the mac will walk you through.

Thanks for the assist.

But there is actually no service. It is a small company that provides internet service only.

I just dial-up to their service using a simple dial-up connection, then I use my browser to search.

But, I will try what you said and let you know how it goes.

Thanks again.

Actually, the modem doesn't show up under system preferences?

The ethernet does, the firewire does; but not the modem.

I am a PC guy, so I don't know a lot about macs.

A friend of mine gave this to my wife.
He wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled the operating system.

Any chance anything happened to the modem settings durring that?

Any way to recover it?

Click on the Apple menu/About this mac. Clikc More Info in the next window. The clcik on Network in next window.

You should get Built in Ethernet & Modem. If you don't get Modem, there isn't one in the machine. If that's the case you can get a usb modem if you want.

If there is, check the settings on your pc to see how it connects to the dial up.

David,

Stupid questions:

1. When you say "System Preferences" do you mean "System Information"? - you get this panel by selecting "About this Mac" from the apple menu and then clicking on "More information" - if you're running OSX. In that case, you should see a section labeled "Network" with a sub-section labeled "Modems".

2. Speaking of OSX... What version of the OS are you running? If you're running OS 9, things will be very different.

3. What kind of Mac? A lot of newer Macs don't have modems any more.

4. If you're running OSX, and System Information shows the modem, go back to "System Preferences", then "Network". Select your Location, then use "Show" to list the networkable devices. One of them should be your modem.

To answer both your questions.

It is OS X.
It is a power mac

It does have a modem, according to my friend, who used the modem until he got a high speed connection.

It has an analog (phone) jack on the right side, along with the ethernet jack.

On the about this mac section, it lists a modem under net work, but no information is found when I click on it?

How could it have a phone jack built-in but no modem?

How could it list a modem but no information?

any chance it is disabled or "turned off"?

You have a modem but you should get a little info when you click on it : Internal Modem:

Interface: modem
Type: PPP (PPPSerial)

If you don't get that, something could be bad. If you have the install disk for the computer try using the "hardware check" that comes on it.

As a quick check, type a 2 word note and go to Print. The click on the Fax button. Type in a telephone number on the next screen and try sending. If you don't get a dial tone and hear the dialing, something is poo-poo. If you do get it, it's something to do with connecting to your isp.

I could not understand your earlier thing about simply dialing the isp without isp software since I've never heard of anything like that. I don't know how you activated the modem for the dialing without some sort of software.

Hi dpimental

Running OS 10.4.10 on the Intel iMac here and it came without a modem.
However if I look under the Apple/System Preferences/Print & Fax that brings up a window where you can choose to Set Up Fax Modem and you should be able to fax through the modem by hooking up the phone cable without having to be online.
You might need to have FaxStf installed which is a free program.
Give that a try and see what happens.
Hope this helps
