Help with Ceanup Avaya IP Office v2 1

I find myself, once again, in uncharted territory with a site I've become responsible for. Two questions, somewhat related.

1. Is there a way to determine if there is a phone, or device, connected to a cable plugged into an expansion mod port?
2. I have a lot of duplicate and unused extensions. Is it "safe" for me to just delete or should I investigate?

Question one I've tried calling and testing resistance, which did not work. "Reverse" toning would be a nightmare as there are over 35 IDF closets.
Question two I've never seen such a mess and have no idea why. Some extensions are labeled "Fire ?????" and "Simplex ????" (which I know are fire emergency boxes.

duplicate extensions or users ?
Extensions you can only delete if they are IP extensions not digital as they represent hardware on the phone system.
In the programming if you go to the extensions you can see what device is on that, the same actually in the user as well on the main user page.

You can also go to System Status and see under extensions what is connected and delete all the superfluous programming. Backups made prior are your friend just in case you need to upload it all again :)

Thanks for your great response. COVID Booster knocked me down since I posted. I hope you will still respond to the following responses.

All of the unused cables plugged into my expansion mods are analog. Three years ago, they built a new building and moved several departments from one complex to the new one. Most of the phones in the new complex are IP so it appears that they just abandoned the old extensions. I just want to make sure there is still no device on the port before I do anything.

Item 2 I am talking about duplicate extensions. For example, I have two extension 0000. One is on mod 10 port 23 and the other is 5-23. The fact that I know extensions are associated with hardware is what is confusing me. I did not think Avaya would allow you to create duplicate extensions. There is an option to delete the record for these extensions. Since I have always created unique extensions for each port, I never dealt with the need to delete an extension. My concern is, what happens if I delete the record of an extension?

I did not think to go into System Status but now I see that there are no duplicates under extensions in System Status. What is that telling me? As I said, I've never seen a system this messed up before nor not been able to find answers within the documentation. I appreciate the help this site has provided.

analog extensions are hard to identify if there is still something connected. if there is no user logged in then I would just assume them as disconnected. IF a user is still logged on calling it is the only way to identify.
HINT: you can call the port directly or the "extension" directly without actually following the user no-answer path and then you can call it and let it ring until the power shuts off

Default codes are
*70*N# which calls the physical extension number - that also means you can call the 0000 extension
*71*N# calls the ID number of the extension port - works on analog, digital and IP extension ID's

I use that sometimes if I don't know where a phone is and I let it ring until someone picks up in a building with people or walk around and listen to a phone ringing if the building is empty.

Thanks for the update. Walking around was my first thought but decided to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I did not think of calling either the physical extension or port ID, thanks.

I appreciate being able to bounce this off someone as I'm a little overwhelmed with the state of things. I used your idea of going into System Status to look at the extensions. I now have more confusion as only one of the duplicate extensions shows up. I have looked at the module and port of both, some of which have nothing plugged in. That brings me back to, can I delete the record for that extension.


Oh, backups have always been my best friend. Thanks again.



 
Why not just change the extension number of one of the duplicates? If you do delete them the system will repopulate them when it is rebooted. It will more than likely number the port with the next extension from the highest current extension list (ie the highest current extension is 451 the system will assign the recreated ext 452)

Checking analog station (disconnected from the IPO station port) with an ohm meter will show the "kick" of the ringer capacitor and then show infinite resistance. Reversing the test leads will show the kick again, and then infinity again. Use a Sidekick meter instead, with the built in polarity switch, or find an old "KS" meter with a "Reverse" switch to do the same.
