I have been out of the IT field for approximately 8 yrs. I have been given the task of installing our new POS and I don't know where to start. Currently we are running Adelio but our other locations are running Micros. Can I just remove the Adelio from the system and install Micros? Do I need a standalone PC running Windows NT? I'm at a lost! Anyone in the Atlanta area that could assist? It's a small install. Currently have 3 workstations, will possibly be running 4.

It depends partly on how old your server is. Micros doesn't sell or support any products that run on NT anymore. I'm assuming that with a small location like that you're going with a 3700. If that's the case your PC will have to be running at least XP Pro.

If it were me I'd put in a new hard drive, load the OS and then the POS software. I'd be afraid the uninstall would leave a lot of garbage behind that could interfere with the new POS.

Workstations might be a problem too if you aren't buying new ones. Micros is tough to get going on 3rd party hardware, and if they're running Win95 or w2k the new software won't even load on them.

Either way, even if you're installing yourself I'd suggest getting in touch with your local Micros dealer for at least a consultation. They're going to be the ones supporting your system and may have some recommendations that will make everybody's life easier if something goes wrong down the road.

What version of micros are you installing?

Things to consider.

If version 3.2 x then you need at least win2k or higher
if version 4.x you need at least win xp pro or win2k3

For 4.x
clients can run on win2k pro SP4 with .net 1.1 sp1 install

For 3.2 SPx
clients can run on win95 or higher.
