Most of my punch down work is on BIX blocks so when I run across 66 blocks it is usually a bad time getting the IDC
seated. I'm using a Harris punch down tool with one of their
66 blades. Can anyone suggest a good technique for successful punch downs on 66 blocks or is there a better
punch down tool available? BTW I've tried the low and high setting on the tool with not much success.

Thanks

It is hard to describe, much easier to show. You shoukd get a 66 Block and practice. Most techs start out on 25 pair cable termination on 66 blocks.

Good Luck!!

In my experience if you keep the tool slanted a few degrees toward the cutting edge it works better. I most often push the wire down and then release the tension before pushing down to the popover point on the tool.

is there a link to the standard way to punch down 66 blocks? as in what order the wires go in?

Leave yourself plenty of end to cut off.
hook your wires into the 66 blade and as you
begin to push with your tool, pull the excess
out in line with the tool. This should help
with a clean cutoff.

A couple other points for you.
Harris is about the best you will find for the tool you are using. The high and low settings have to do with how much pressure it hits with. On a 66 block you can leave it on high. if you are working on cat5 patch panels with 110 connectors you want to set it on low, because many of them actually have a printed circut board in them and the high setting could crack them.
