hello,

i'm trying to set up a stand-alone test system for 2k3 server. when installing the dns, dhcp, and active directory it asks for an internet connection. the issue is that i'm currently using that connection for my other computers in the house. i have a linksys with dhcp enabled serving four computers. i know that 2k3 server will not want to share these functions, and i don't want to disable it on 2k3 server either, since i have another computer to use to play around with it. suggestions on how i go about cohabitating these two stand-alone networks with one inet connection?

thanks,
k

Add an additional linksys between your current linksys and the server. Set your server to be on a different subnet such as 10.0.0.2. Set the new linksys to get an IP via DHCP for its Internet connection and manually set its LAN side to be 10.0.0.1.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark

What your machine is actually asking for is a network connectioin. Win2k3 will not install anything like what you want until you plug it into a network. You can make your own loopback network connector if you want. Costs about 50p or $1 wherever you are from!

You do not need extra hardware. You could just have it connected to the network while you install. You will have to reboot, by then, just unplug it again.

Anyway, it will not do much without being plugged into a network - its a server!

Dan, he has DHCP on both the server and Linksys, that will cause problems were he to connect it to the existing network.

Loopback would work but then he won't be able to patch the server which isn't advisable.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
