I have recently been studying for the CCNA...

Home lab includes:

2509 as a Terminal Server, plus…
- R1: 2610XM Router 128D/48F w/ SDM & CME, 1 Fast E. Port, 1 Serial Port (WIC-1T card)
- R2: 2610XM Router 128D/48F w/ SDM & CME, 1 Fast E. Port, 1 Serial Port (WIC-1T card)
- R3: 2610XM Router 128D/48F w/ SDM & CME, 1 Fast E. Port, 4 Serial Ports (NM-4A/S)
- S1: 2950C Switch with Enhanced Image (24 Fast Ethernet Ports)
- S2: 2950C Switch with Enhanced Image (24 Fast Ethernet Ports)

I also have an 851 SOHO Router I intended to use to practice with SDM / SDM Express, as well as using it as the firewall from my ISP's cable modem. On the lan side I wanted to connect the 2509 Terminal Server as well as a Cisco/Linksys wireless router that serves the rest of my home network...

I have tried various methods to set up the 851- all to no avail.
I have tried resetting the config-register to 0x2142 and back to 0x2102 as well as using the reset button on the back of the device.

I CAN now enter SDM Express; but, it freezes when I click <NEXT> to move from the DHCP screen to the INTERNET(WAN) screen in the SDM Express Wizard- I can always click <BACK> successfully; but, can never move forward from this point...

Any ideas?

I have tried SDM as well- If I use the WAN wizard in SDM, I get a DNS Lookup failure message... Can't DNS info come in with the IP address assigned by DHCP from the cable modem on the WAN interface?

TIA,

-Allen M.

Update...

got rid of WAN DNS error from CLI with: ip domain lookup

BUT- still cant access WAN from LAN... Clicking on Internet(WAN) from SDM Express causes SDM Express to freeze...

Further update...

I CAN ping known public DNS servers from the 851; so, the WAN interface is connected to the internet...

Ok, added a gateway of last resort and now I seem okay...

BUT

Any idea why all the problems with SDM? Is it possible the IOS image is bad, or I need an updated image? All I have access to is the version in the router and an old disk w- SDM v2.5

Hmmm...
Back to can't ping internet again...
Wish I could sort what's going on here...

Seems like this ought to be easy for a wannabe CCNA...

double check your java version it should be 1.4 update 11 or earlier (if I remember correctly). how much time have you spent in the CLI?? now would seem like the perfect tiem to acquainted with it since you are an aspiring CCNA. if you need some guidance, post the scrubbed config from your 851 and we'll help you out.

unclerico:
...java version it should be 1.4 update 11 or earlier...

So, newer isn't better? I found a questionable cable as part of the issue as well... (damn those layer 1 problems!)

Anyway, I'll replace the cable, look into the Java compatibility issue- then post the config if that doesn't sort it...

Tnx,

-A

update SDM to Configuration professional and also SMD Express to CP express on the router, then your Java issues (almost) go away!

You need a cisco support agreement to access their software, but since Im feeling generous today:

its not the latest, but its only .1 version different.

The OP is studying for CCNA which tests on SDM knowledge, CP.

Thanks to a better cable AND a better app, (thanks for CP!), all is right with the world. SDM will connect now, and at least let me get a feel for that app, too; even though it is still kinda wonky with the JRE mis-match...

Config Prof looks the same as SDM - only surrounded by a pretty blue frame...
