We have a HP proliant at a remote office which "crashed" twice in one day recently (second time was about an hour after the first). Both times the server responded to ping and was able to resolve hostnames, but we were unable to RDP, access file shares or access services remotely (which we normally can do fine). The server is 2003 SP1 (not R2) and acts as a DC, DNS, DHCP and file and print server. Pressing CTRL ALT DEL at the console done nothing.

Both times after the server came back up, there was hardly antyhing in the event logs to indicate why the server crashed. The second time it came back up, it did look like it was crashing agin, but pressing CTRL ALT DEL brought it back to life again. The server has TrendMicro OfficeScan client installed, when I unloaded this, the server stabilized and has been OK since (even after reloading OfficeScan). The server also has WSUS and OfficeScan server installed as well as APC PowerChute.

I know it's a long shot but does anybody have any ideas how I can find out what might have caused this? Or has anybody experienced anything similar to this. It may be just coincidence that it stabilized after unloading OfficeScan, I don't know as it hasn't crashed since.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you check to see if all fans are moving? Sounds like it could have overheated.

Other than that I would say your RDP service failed for some reason.

I hope you find this post helpful.
