I know that this may not be appropriate for this forum, but any help would be appreciated. Whenever my son logs into his Yahoo IM account he starts getting harassed by someone. The question is: Does someone have an idea on how to track and obtain the originating IP or location of the originating message. I am more comfortable with hardware than I am with software. Any ideas on how to identify this trouble would be greatly appreciated.

kb5fet,
change the IM account?
document & report?
regards,
longhair

Thanks longhair. I hope to be able to determine where the harassment is originating and to find out who may be doing it. Tall order I know, but it is aggravating.

Thank you,

kb5fet,
don't know if you will ever find out. if an aquaintence maybe - but if so you'd have figured that out by the screen name already. if it's not someone you know then I doubt you'll ever find out. either way i think it is important to report the harassment to yahoo (there are too many nut cases in the world). with documentation they should be able to shut down the offending account.
as far as finding out the ip - what if the user on the other end is on dialup / dsl - ip is dynamic.
regards,
longhair

just change your IM name & it will stop being an annoyance

Set a block on that name. Depending which IM client you are using you would do this in various ways.

The offender can register a different account and start again, but it should also be possible to specify that you only receive messages from people in your contact list.
Add to this the fact some IM clients can be set to allow approval before you are added to a contact list and you should be able to stop the messages.

What client is it?

Hehe, actually, whats the IM platform and what's the ID of the offender? :)
