Help to a xserver crash 1

Hi :

I have a COMPAQ DESKPRO 933, with Mandrake 8.1, when i try to start my X Windows Server system, it shows the following Fatal server error : could not open deault font 'fixed'.

Can you help me?

Hi,

Your system is probably configured to use the x font-server (xfs) so I'd guess thats not running or there is some corruption in the config file or suchlike. Try as root :

/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs start

and see if that makes a difference. You would need to make sure xfs is on at runlevel 5 in future by :

/sbin/chkconfig --level 5 xfs on

If you have problems you can always do it the non-xfs way by putting lines like this in your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file :

FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled"
FontPath        "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled"

( The entry :

FontPath "unix/:-1"

Indicates use of the xfs server )
