This Wednesday I have to go to a small office and install Windows 2000 server on this new server computer. My problem is, this guy has already 3 computers ( 2- Windows XP and 1 - ME ) setup in a small workgroup, which are currently on a switch and all getting the internet through a DHCP by DSL. This guy wants me to set up all his existing computers as clients and have his server as the domain controller. His primary goal is to be able to file share all computers and have all set up for the internet through his DHCP DSL account. What should I do???
Thanks,
Omar

Decide on an IP addressing scheme-- for instance 192.168.10.1-100 255.255.255.0
Install Server and give it ip address 192.168.10.2 and run DCPROMO to make it a domain controller.
call the domain company.local (obviously company is the company your at)
install DNS,DHCP and WINS on the server
From one of the existing clients logon to the DSL router- usually gateway IP (will require a password)
you will need to turn DHCP off and also alter the local LAN ip port address to 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0

back to the sever:
run DNS manager and locate the . (thats a dot) folder in the Forward lookup zone section -- delete this folder (the dot)
now exit DNS and re-enter it now if your right click the server and go to properties you will have the ability to change the forwarders tab section-- add a forwarder and you will need to enter the ip address of this companies ISP DNS server address (the ISP will have given it you)
Enter DHCP-- and create a new scope follow the wizard through and start the range from 192.168.10.3-50
add the defaut gateway address as 192.168.10.1
add the DNS and WINS as 192.168.10.2

now your ready to join the existing pcs onto the network.
(win2k)Right click mycomputer and properties and choose computer name and choose change
select domain and type in the domain name-- company.local
ou then need to supply the administrator username and password for the server.

Now maybe create the Users on the server- do this in Administrative tools and active directory users and computers.
Nicer if you create a new OU (folder) for the new users-- so right click your domain name on the left panel and choose new- OU
give it a name-- say company-users
right click within the right hand pane and choose New users
create users for whoever is going to be on the network.

Now create some shares on the server for the users to use has home folders

Finally its up to you wether you create a login script or just manually map the drives for the users.
its nicer to use login scripts.

gimme a shout if you have any questions-- obviously there is a lot to do for somone that hasnt done it before.

I have a question for GarethT because I am in the same circumstance. The company I am setting up has a 2000 server and 10 XP machines. They have a DSL Internet connection with 5-assigned static IPs. How can I setup the office so all the systems can access the WAN at the same time? Since they have the 5 static IPs already assigned, can I use a different internal addressing scheme to create the LAN?

Yus-- make sure DHCP is turned off on the DSL router
now create an internal address range that corresponds with the local interface of the DSL router-- so for instance if the interface is 192.168.0.1 then set your servers lan card as 2 etc.

now - the DSL router will be doing NAT hopefully- which means it can automatically translate the 1 public IP addy its using into the different local ip address`s- so dont worry about that.

just make sure you follow the similair path that ive outlined above.

Now if youve got an SMTP mailfeed and not a pop3 one- thn it gets a bit more complicated on the e-mail front-- you would have to either create a static mapping to one of your spare public ip addresses or port forwarding of 25 to a certain host (server)
