...and there is no other user accounts that have root permissions. Is there anything I can do? Thanks in advance, I'll be sitting here sweating it out waiting for a reply!

I forgot to put that when we try $su it doesn't allow us to go to #.

Emergency boot disks?
Or mount it another system and access the drive there.
What version? May be able to get access via the install set.

Additional info at the "A.P Lawrence" site.

OS is 5.0.7. Can't use lon-tar EBD cause you have to log in as root. Can't mount drive w/o being root. Is maintainence mode same as single-user mode? If it is, I can't get in that way either.

Can you please describe how to use the install set?

Also, this server is 4 states away from me, might have to be shipped to me?

Try the "A P Lawrence" site. Pretty good description there.

Are you certain that root is disabled?
I didn't think that was possible. Especially in maintenance (i.e. single-user) mode.
Could it just be an incorrect password?
Are you getting a message stating that the account has been disabled?

Do you have any other UNIX servers on the same network with user equivalency configured? (this would be uncommon for most sites).

Even if the root account is disabled, you should still be able to log onto the system as root if you are on the OVERRIDE device.

See /etc/default/login for this entry:
OVERRIDE=tty01

Thanks guys, will report back, got something to try.
