HELP!! remote printing with dlink & epson

hi, i have two sco 5.05 boxes and i need to print to a epson fx980 which is on a dlink -d100 print server.
i can ping the print server by name and ip.

when i set up the printer in print manager
it appears to go in. but when i exit from print manager
and go back in, its dissapeared !

i have manually added the line to printcap and i can
get a file into the q. but it never goes anywhere.

is there a step by step guide anywhere.
should the job be going to the other unix box
or direct to the dlink?

ive had it working when the printers were local, ie attached to a specialix. but now its on a print server i cant seem to get it working.

Different print servers work differently, but I think you should be sending the print jobs directly to the print server not the other unix box. Does the print server manual have instructions for unix configuration?

I have two different kinds of print servers at my location, and both are installed and configured using a different method. The Intel Netport print managers I have must be installed using their software package, not the SCO print manager. If I try to manually add the settings to the printcap file they don't work. If I add them using the SCO print manager they don't work.

I don't have any dlink print servers, so I can't give you technical help for the specific server. You should refer to the printer manual for installing in unix. If you don't have the manual, here is the download from dlink's site:

The SCO instructions start on page 88. Glancing through the instructions I notice that the print server needs to be added to the /etc/hosts file before it can be seen by the system, so that may be your problem.

thanks ive tried what was in the manual.
its much the same as i had anyway.

but i still cannot print to the remote printer
it just sits in the q.

its really strange.

When setting up dlink print servers on our SCO box I run command where dlink1 is the printer name

In here we enter the following details;
at the UNIX command prompt type:
rlpconf

"enter the name of the printer"(Q to Quit)
dlink1

"is dlink1 a remote printer or a local printer(R / L )?"
[R]

"Please enter the name of the remote host that"
dlink1
is attached to:
[dlink.dleth.com]
Printer dlink1 is connected to dlink.dleth.com

"Is this correct (Y / N)?
[Y]

If [dlink.dleth.com] currently runs SCO Open server Release 5 or ab
ove it can support the extended remote line printer protocol.Do you want to turn on "extended RLP protocol" support flag?
"If you are not sure, answer no( Y / N)
[Y]

"Would you like this to be the system default printer (Y / N)
[N]


Test the printer using :

lpr -ddlink1 filename Nogs

ive got a bit further;->

ive added the remote box in host.equiv
and when i lpr -dhost file i get a file in
the spool directory and the status file contains
"waiting for hostJ to come up"

i can ping the host no problem at all, by name and ip

any ideas??

Start with the following technical article re: disappearing remote printers: TA109737

Setup the D-Link to use the appropriate queue name e.g.

DLINK-1 or whatever your choice is. Use the Print Manager to setup a remote printer-->Unix and use the ip address in the host name and then enter the queue name EXACTLY as you see it in the D-Link configuration (pay attention to upper and lower case letters - do not use any spaces; I use DLINK-PS1-1 as an example representing manufacturer, print server#, and port #). You will then be able to print using a syntax similar to "lp -s -dDLINK-PS1-1" with whatever options you choose to use.
