I had the XP Internet Security malware on this computer and used Malwarebytes to remove it. Now I cannot get to the internet and I suspect the Authentium firewall is preventing access to the Internet, but I cannot find any place to remove this firewall or to disable it. The XP Security Center also shows Authentium Antivirus as potentially being downlevel. I have searched the registry and filenames for anything starting with auth* or Anth* and also for DvpApi without success. Using Process Explorer, I can not find anything indicating it might be related to Authentium. I suspect that this may be left over from a couple of years ago when Earthlink security suite had been installed. It has long been removed. Any suggestions short of an XP repair?

Sometimes these malware like to place entries in the Proxy Server Settings of IE/ Tools/ Internet Options/ Connections/ LAN Settings, these are normally just blank for most home users so see what you have entered in there. This is just one common way they prevent Internet access.

Thanks Turkbear, the post at spywarepoint.com had the solution. I had seen that post earlier, but failed to see that there was two pages to it and did not get the part about rebuilding the Repository. That took care of the Authentium indication of antivirus and firewall, but did not help the internet connectivity. I then uninstalled the LAN adapter and reinstalled it. Once that was done, all is working. Not sure what was messed up - Winsock stack appeared okay, and all network diagnostics told me was the ARP to the gateway was unsuccessful. Anyway, all is now working again.

Linney, I had checked the proxy settings and they were not messed up. I had also run a HiJackThis and did not see anything in the log to concern me either.
