I have just replaced a faulty motherboard with a new one. It detects the HDD when booting but once it gets to the dos prompt it installs the virtual disk on C and the CDROM as D. No HDD letter. I can't fdisk or format.

I'm using a P3 750 processor, 10 GB HDD, Gigabyte m'board, 128MB RAM.

Please help, I've tried different boot disks but no joy.

Did you install the CPU yourself?????

Did you load the Mobo chipset drivers before trying to boot????

After doing that Check the BIOS to make sure that it has the appropriate settings(Recognizing the CPU speed, Memory, etc) at POST....

Then load the Video card drivers....

Then use Boot disc.....CD ROM preferable(Set BIOS to 'boot from CD ROM' as first boot device).....

These are just "my" thoughts....and should be carefully measured against other opinions....I try very hard to impart correct info at all times.

As a first step try fdisk /mbr. It rewrites the boot sector and sometimes makes it available.

Second step would be run the manufacturer's diagnostic, then the zero fill to put all zeros into the drive.
Then retry fdisk.
