Help - Problem joining paths?

I expect this is a very simple problem but I just can't find out how to do it.

I'm trying to join up end points in two paths, but after selecting both points and clicking join i just get an error message "To join you must select two open end points" etc. MAybe the problem is that the paths are in differing layers, but I can't work out how to overcome this (tried flattening artwork, collecting in a new layer etc).

CAn any one help me out?

be sure to select the white arrow
the black one wont help
then right click mouse and join
u shuld get a line between the two points
