How do i configure DHCP on my local network..

i want to have a network of about 35 pcs running winXP as clients and a server running win2000

my topology is a Vsat modem as the Internet link and the win2000 machine [server] havin 2 network cards - 1 to the Vsat modem and the other to the switch aggregating all the other client connections .

I want to know how to automatically assign tyhe clients IP's.

Also people Please send me links to anny information-laden web-based resource on DHCP / Vsat link maintenance and configuring DHCP on a local network.

DHCP On your network ?

It DEPENDZ.

Throw on a good, stateful inspection and easy to manage FIREWALL and let the Firewall act as the DHCP server and giving out IP's internal. You can even assign IPs and Macs in the firewall so they remain the same. Don't buy a cheapo cause it will need a good processor. I like Symantec Firewalls and I hear that there are others....

Firwall connects to WAN port (VSAT) and LAN (Switch port) and clients to switch, server to switch.

Either way- you want to secure the VSAT link and don't rely upon the carrier/UPLINK~Downlink security. Start with a firewall and then throw on some free DISCOVERY app such as 3Coms Transcend Network Supervisor- FREE Man ! Look for and monitor your network and get to know the bottleknecks and go from there. You can see some revealing info.

Ifn your switches are manageable (hope so) then set their IPs too.

No pun intended- Get some of those Networking for Dummies series books on ebay, amazon.com etc....

Hard code all your NICs and switch ports (assuming Managed) and set all your IPs and SMN and of course the default gateway would be the Firewall.

Pay as you go, play as you may.

Have fun.

. Win2k server can act in the DHCP server role, as for 35 clients even most inexpensive routers.

. The problem is VSAT. You may have no practical choice other than using the router the VSAT ISP provides for such cases. For small LANs I have used ICS, and a router. But this is a case where you should ask the VSAT ISP for the appropriate router.
