Healthstores,

As you have researched I'm sure, there are thousands of retail point of sale solutions from the basic ring'em up and move'em out, to full blown inventory, wireless control devices, credit card interfaces, etc. I could go on for a page or so.

From your other post, it appears you are shopping pretty hard. Couple of things to help find a place to start,

What type of platform does the software run on? Is it something that you know and can support and tweak yourself.

Don't know anything about manipulating database code, or too much about computers, other than using the mouse, then local support will be real important.

How much inventory control do you need? You get what you pay for, (sometimes..).

Do you have a high turnover rate with staff, then you will need an easy to use user interface.

Can you schedule price changes for sales, can you use purchase orders only when you want to.

Most important, how does it interact with other periphials? Do you have to have dedicated hardware or can you use anything that comes with OPOS drivers? Such as barcode printers, receipt printers, and scanners.

Again I could go on for pages. I guess what I am getting at is get yourself a checklist together on what you expect to get out of the system and compare the softwares tit for tat.

Hey Bo,
Thanks for the information, yes I have been doing a ton of research and now feel much more knowledgeable on the subject. I've come to learn there are two types of POS companies, older somewhat outdated ones that can be very limiting though for smaller businesses are affordable and can do the job. Or, there are Java Based POS companies that can do anything under the sun and are completely adaptable, and are used by top fortune 500 companies - that come with fortune 500 prices. These companies also won't do business with you unless you have at least 200+ stores. I think I finally found something with a bit of both - Celerant - Java platform that makes my IT people happy, with all the bells and whistles and is geared for the smaller business - Affordable. I have a Demo with one of their reps and will post what I think soon...
Thanks again!
