Hello everyone,

I am new to this networking stuff and am currently trying to network an IBM eServer xSeries to IMac's. The server will be used as the file server and the IMac's will be used as the workstations.

I can ping the IMac's on the IBM server, however I can not see the IBM Server on the IMac's.

I need to set up 650 users and approx. 50 workstations and am totally "LOST". We are using AppleShare on the IMac's and Windows on the IBM.

ANY help is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Desperate in IL [hourglass]

Well, since you're running a Windows server on the IBM and not OS/400...

Have you enabled Appletalk protocol on the Windows machine?

You'll need to right-click on "My Network Places" and then select "properties". Right-click on your local area connection (network card) icon. From there you will need to select "Properties" also.

You should see all the protocols or services you have installed. If you don't have Appletalk installed then select the "Install" button, choose "Protocol" and then choose "Appletalk".

Hope that helps. Hope that works. J.R. Juiliano

Hi,

Connecting computers of different kinds, involves
about them both and networking operations.

1st, you have to connect physically them, and if their standard are not same you have to acheive hw adapters.
Reading your post, you have passed this step.
(ethernet,tokenring,twinax,mac net,serial line....)

2nd you have to meet protocols: of the seven ISO/OSI levels
you have to macth the higest level you can. I belive
that both machines use TCP/IP: you can ping MAC from xSer,
and I belive, that you can do the same from Imac (I dont know IMAC, but I belive exist a utility program inthis platform). If exists utils, but does not ping, there is
a mismatch in Nmask or default gateway or other.

When the two machines pings each to other, the problem
is not finished: it begins. One of the two machines has to
emulate the other; seeing your post, the jrjuiliano one,
and my experience, in this case Windows emulate IMAC: as
jrjuiliano suggested, this is the emulator that you can
install on Win. When done, you sould see IBM from apple
and if you create a share on Win, you can see it from ws.

If you stop at permission problems, don't worry: you are
almost at the end of adventure

bye
