I'm trying to place a word document into pm6.52. the text comes in fine, but the pictures do not.

p4 with 512 meg ram / winxp

I'm using the win97 v1.4 filter.
the pictures are stored inside of a table in msword.
the table is 2 cells. top cell has picture, bottom cell has a caption (btw - the caption comes in fine).

error on utilizing "file/place" is as follows :

[* No filter found for the requested operation. | In-line.PNG *]

thanx in advance for any help possible.

That's correct. PM only imports and converts the text.

To get the images into PM:
Open the *.doc file in MS Word, copy'n'paste the images into MS's Photo Editor, save them in TIFF format and then place them into PM.

Do not import PNG files into PM - see this FAQ: faq227-5345

thanx. so if I place pictures directly into pm, you mention .tif only. that will make the document size huge, no?

why can't I place 300dpi .jpg. I realize it's not lossless, but if I don't edit the .jpg in pm, then there should be no loss of resolution / quality.

btw - I do have original .tif's for all my pictures, I was just thinking .jpg's to manage file size. the word doc I'm placing is already ~60meg with jpg included. if I go to .tif, I'm envisioning several hundred meg.

thanx for the awesomely quick reply.

regards,

david

As it says in the FAQ:

* ONLY use File -> Place to bring graphics into PageMaker:-

When placing images in a PageMaker file, the following message appears:
“The graphic in the linked file would occupy xxxxxxx bytes in the publication. Include the complete copy in the publication anyway?”
The correct answer to this question is always "NO".

If you feel your PM file is on the large size, then:

1. Make sure you link your images when you place them into PM. Do not embed them in any way.
2. Under File -> Preferences -> General, select "Save Smaller" under Save options.
3. Resave your publication using "Save as…" giving it a new name/location.

Generally speaking, filesize in PM takes second place to quality.

And yes, in general, TIFF is always preferred over JPG with PM.
