I accidentally format a hard drive in a Compaq Presario using Compaq Quick Restore. I thought I had backup the data, but the person who was suppose to do it, did not do it. When I realize the problem, it was about 15% into the formatting. I turn off the power. When I tried to rebbot the PC it had lost its boot-up section.

I install the hardisk as a second drive to another computer. I was able to see the data but most of the file would not open. It said "Cannot access read-only ..." Click OK and it will say "Cannot access {filename}". The filename and sizes looks correct.

I am using Win98 2nd.
Is it possible to recover a partially format drive?
Any good software that I can use to recover these files.
I don't have to recover the whole drive just part of the data.
Thanks

bradds, Thanks. I have tried some others recovery tool.
They are mainly for undelete files or Unformat utility.
The unformat utilities that I have tried are for full unformat, which I do not want to try. I don't mind paying for a program that would work properly, but I hate paying for something that does not work. Also some of these programs only work well if you have install these on your hard drive, so it has an image of your hard drive stored.

I'll keep looking but I am running out of time.

I've used with some success an app called "Easy Recovery 512"...it costs but it works in all situations that I tried. Can't remember where it came from but search google and you should find it!

Cheers
