Help opening a TAR file

Can someone help me out here.

How do you go about opening and viewing a TAR file. I've done it once before a long time ago, but for the life of me can't figure out how to do it now.

Under windows, WinZip or power archive will take care of you.

under anything remotely unix-y, cd somewhere that you have lots of space, then use the tar command:

tar -xvf filename.tar

or, if it's compressed:

tar -xvzf filename.tar.gz
