Hello I'm a new linux person so I chose PhatLinux. It uses X-Server and KDE and lots of other things that I don't understand yet. Some info on my system first.

PIII 933
384 Pc133 Ram
20 g HD
40 G Hd
Nvidia Geforce 2 MX 400
Soundblaster Audigy

My sb card is IRQ 9 is windows but no matter what X server (or some tool like that) tells me that its busy or not responding.

The graphics are fine when it boots, just low resolution but when I try to set them it looks like some one hit my moniter with a hammr.

Please Help me figure out how to find all the nessacary info.If phat linux really isn't good then tell me what a good (FREE) distrabution is.

Thank you. Brad,

Your in luck with the nvidia card. Nvidia is the only company currently that has specific drivers for their card. Go to to download the drivers. Make sure to read the howto so you understand what to do.

If you have on board audio on your motherboard, make srue to turn it off in bios. Then run sndconfig from console as root, and it should do a basic configuration of your card. That card is too new to have drivers specific to it yet I'm sure.

BTW, I like RedHat linux, lots of good documentation out there. I've heard that Mandrake is pretty good also. I would definetly stick to the more popular distros untill you get good with linux so you have better support. ;)

I did install mandrake later, but i ran into problems and removed it around 1 month ago. Brad,
