The 1st time I upgraded from IE 5.5 SP1 to IE 5.5 SP2, the installation stops at around 70%-90%. Then I uninstalled IE 5.5 SP1 and tried to install IE 5.5 SP2, the same problem occured, installation stops in the middle, doesn't ever complete. I even tried to disabled auto-protect of Norton Antivirus, close down all programs, leaving only systray and installed it again, but to no avail. I also scanned the registry for problems, defragmented my hard disk and did a scandisk b4 I install, but still got the same problem. I followed every step of How To Install IE The Right Way, checked all possible problems from the Microsoft website and tested many solutions to similar problems. However, I can't find a way to deal with this problem. The 2nd less major problem I'm having is that I can't listen to bgsound after inserting one and clicking the preview button in FrontPage 2000. I also used IE to open the page that contains a bgsound, but there's still no sound coming out. I'm using Windows ME, hope someone can give me good solutions to solve my problems~

I think it might be worth running the repair tool for IE before applying the service pack(s). If some IE functionality is not present (eg embedded sound playing), then there may be something wrong with it. It may be necessary to completely uninstall IE and start again. To get rid of IE try IEradicator If it works you can then do a clean install of 5.5

With regards to the bgsound issue, what code did you use, is it a relative or absolute link, and what if any error message do you get?

Hope this helps:

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5

SUMMARY
This article describes how to uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION
Before you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5, quit all running programs.

For additional information about problems that can occur if you do not quit all running programs before uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Q165646 Program Settings Lost After Internet Explorer Setup or Uninstall
When you install Internet Explorer 5.5 over Internet Explorer 5 or Internet Explorer 5.01, its uninstall behavior varies depending on whether the Internet Explorer uninstall information (used to restore the version of Internet Explorer prior to 5 or 5.01) is present and whether the Internet Explorer 5.01 installation created minor version uninstall information for Internet Explorer 5.

If uninstall information is present when you install Internet Explorer 5.5, the uninstall process restores the computer to the version of Internet Explorer that is contained in the uninstall information (either the version installed before Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01 or Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01). However, if no Internet Explorer uninstall information is present when you install Internet Explorer 5.5 over Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01, the uninstall restores Internet Explorer 5 or 5.01 on the computer.

This chart lists the various upgrade scenarios and the Internet Explorer 5.5 uninstall behavior that can occur in each situation:
Previous version Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5

NOTE: In the case of uninstalling Internet Explorer 5.5 from an upgrade over Internet Explorer 5.01 where uninstall information existed, the computer is restored to the version of Internet Explorer contained within the uninstall information (either Internet Explorer 5 or the version installed before Internet Explorer 5).

If you uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5, you should view one of the following Microsoft Web sites to download any security updates that are needed for the version of Internet Explorer that remains on the computer:

How to Uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5
Use the following steps to uninstall Internet Explorer 5.5 for Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, or Microsoft Windows 2000.

On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools in the list of installed programs, and then click Add/Remove.

NOTE: If "Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools" is missing from the list of installed programs, run Setup.exe from your Internet Explorer\Setup folder. If you are running Windows 2000, run "w2kexcp.exe /u" from your "Internet Explorer\IE Uninstall" folder.

Click Restore the previous Windows configuration (or click Advanced to specify any additional components you want to remove), and then click OK.

The Internet Explorer 5 and Internet Tools Setup dialog box appears. This portion of Setup is referred to as Maintenance mode. When Setup starts, click OK to restore the previous version of Internet Explorer and shared components.

You are prompted to verify that you want to restore the previous version. Click Yes to start the uninstallation process. When the uninstallation process finishes, click Restart Windows when you are prompted to do so.

I've tried using the repair tool and it helped me reinstalled the whole IE again, but that didn't work! From the microsoft website if u've noticed, it says IE can't be uninstalled from Windows ME! After reinstalling or repairing the IE using the repair tool, I still can't hear any bgsound and the upgrading to SP2 also got stuck in the middle of the installation. Anyone smart enough to give me a better solution?

reghakr, those steps u listed down I just tried, they don't work for my half-way-got-stuck installation problem. U're the smartest here right? Oh no, now that even u can't help me, who am I suppose to seek help? Yes, I'm able to listen to QuickTime and Windows Media Player music or movie plugins from a webpage, but I just can't hear a sound from a webpage that has a bgsound!

I've one problem solved, that is, the bgsound problem. Thus, there's one more to go... Here's the Active Setup Log I copied which may provide some clues to my stuck-half-way installation problem:

Maybe the problem lies on the mobilepk.inf?

Is there a Resume Installation icon on the desktop? If so, delete it.

Then rename the Wininit.ini file, restart the computer, and then run Internet Explorer 5 Setup again.

The only entry you should see under these registry keys is (Default). If there are other entries, delkete them.

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnceEx
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce
NOTE: If the problem is still not resolved, check for the existence of old installation files in your TEMP or TMP folders, check for the existence of a folder named "$!$!$!$!" in the root folder, or try emptying the Temporary Internet Files folder.

What's the Wininit.ini file? I've search the entire hard disk but there's no such file. There's no Resume Installation icon in my desktop. There's nothing wrong with those registry keys of mine. I've deleted everything that falls under the WINDOWS\TEMP folder and searched no existence of any $!$!$!$! folder. I've emptied my Temporary Internet Files folder many times. I've did everything u listed but the problem still an't resolved. When I go to Windows Update or those page that needs VBScripting support, it prompts me to install the VBScripting support, but however, the installation stuck at the 100%, it just won't end! Why not I paste the entire Active Setup Log again? Here is it:

I'd delete the filelist.dat from the C:\WINDOWS\Windows Update Setup Files directory and give it another try.
