I have PM7 on a pc running XP home edition. Have had very few, if any, problems until now. I was starting to set up a new document and wanted to change the default font. Went up to the top menu under type and realized that everything was there except "font". It is completely gone! I also noticed on my control bar (is that what it is called?) down on the bottom (that you can move around) it does not show all of the fonts that I have and it used to. I have no clue as to what happened or why or how to fix it. Any suggestions? Many thanks in advance...

How many fonts do you have active in your machine? What kind of fonts are they. While XP can handle more activefonts than 98 or NT, it is recommended that you use a font manager such as Adobe ATM Deluxe 4.1 (not ATM Lite) and uninstall unused fonts if you have more than 150 or so active.

Also, PM does not handle Open Type fonts well.... it only handles True Type (TT) and PostScript Type 1 fonts. If you are using cheap free fonts, they may be of inferior quality and can cause problems.

The menu bar makes me think that you have too many fonts installed. However, you may have to uninstall PM completely, delete all temp files, and do a scandisk and defrag. Then reinstall with antivirus and screensavers disabled. Also make sure that you install under a user that has admin privileges and use it under that user.

hope this helps. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Thanks for the response. Yep...it was too many fonts! I spent the weekend cleaning them out and last night tried PM again and there it was. I realize that I am a fontaholic and therefore I need to be more careful in the future. Didn't realize how many I had on there. Again, thanks for the inpout.

You don't have to get rid of all those fonts forever, you know. You just need to get them out of the Windows>>Fonts folder - the only place that programs can access them from (except PS fonts?). I have an enormous font collection which I keep under control with Bitstream's Font Navigator (which comes with Coreldraw). Fonts I am not currently using I store in a separate folder I created called (a very imaginative) 'Fonts'. If I need to use one of the fonts stored there, I use FN to drag and drop it into my Windows>>Fonts folder. You don't *need* FN (or any other font manager) - it just makes it easier to see what the font looks like without having to open the font file. Alternatively, in Windows Explorer, you can click on the Windows>>Fonts folder, and under 'File' is a menu item 'Install new font'. You can browse to where you have your extra fonts stored, highlight the font you want to activate, and click OK. This will put it where you can then apply it in your work.

After completing the project for which that particular font was used, I usually then put it back in the extra fonts folder - otherwise it can be very easy to clog up your Windows>>Fonts folder again! After completion and printing of the document, I will often write myself a little note at the start of the document stating which font i used so that if I want to reopen it again, I know which font I must install before it looks OK (Pagemaker will tell you this automatically but some other applications - such as Word - won't). If I need to reprint, I can always delete my little note and rewrite it when i have finished.

Or you can just store all your extra fonts on a disk or CD.

Eggles is correct, if you are not using a Font Management Program, get one now. I use Bitstream Font Navigoator myself, it comes packaged with CorelDraw. Adone makes ATM Deluxe for a mere $69. Extnesis Suitcase is rabidly supported by mac people (works on PC too). There are a couple free ones out there, also.
this is a free one for Win NT and 98 only. It has an excellent interface. I have used it on my NT box at home with no difficulty.
this one I have not used, cannot give a recommendation, but it is free. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
