Hi all,
I just finished installing solaris 8 on a new E250.
After mirroring & patching I installed the binary samba 2.2.2 package.
But...the speed i'm getting various from slow to fast.
Most of the time it's slow, while an ftp session between the same hosts goes lightning-fast.

This is a part of the samba log that looks suspicious

All I want to do is have samba listening on this server without interaction with the rest of the network aka wins servers & the like.
The idea is to just "map network drive" with the IP adress & share name.

I tweaked the /dev/tcp settings for the 100Mb ethernet connection, and they get loaded at boot.

Any help greatly appriciated :)

More info on this problem:

I just finished ftp'ing 30 times the same 8Mb file from my laptopn (NT network) to the solaris server.
From those 30 times it goes 27 times fast-as-lightning and then drops to 100Kb on 3 or 4 times.
When I close & reopen FTP commander several times it goes back to it's 6000K+ speed.

The connection is as follows:

E250 - 172.31.11.41 255.255.255.0
router: 172.31.11.1

laptop: 172.31.23.66 255.255.254.0
router: 172.31.22.1

traceroute laptop --> server
H:\>tracert 172.31.11.41

Tracing route to 172.31.11.41 over a maximum of 30 hops

1 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 172.31.22.2
2 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 172.31.22.6
3 <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms 172.31.11.41

Trace complete.

Traceroute E250 - laptop:
# traceroute 172.31.23.66
traceroute to 172.31.23.66 (172.31.23.66), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 172.31.11.3 (172.31.11.3) 0.963 ms 0.633 ms 0.610 ms
2 * 172.31.23.66 (172.31.23.66) 1.364 ms 2.173 ms

Any help greatly appriciated, i'm down to grinding my teeth & getting ready to jump out of the window...

Hi all,

Found the problem after checking out the network routes.
Going from my laptop to the server uses an extra router which doesn't have "ip forwarding" or something similar not activated.
When reconfiguring my laptop to skip the 22.6 router all works like a charm.

Thank-god for sanity,
i'm going to have one helluva good party weekend!

Cheers,
