Hi all, I am currently trying to install RedHat Enterprise 4.0 AS on my laptop. The laptop has a Promise Fast-Trak 100 raid controler which is not built into the linux instalation. The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive so I need to do this off of my usb flash drive or a cd. I tried running
Code:
linux dd[\code] and was able to access the driver files on my flash drive, however, it wouldn't let me use any of the files on there saying they were not a valid driver image or something to that effect. This is the driver I am trying to use:

I'm sure I'm just missing something stupid here, but I am pretty much a newbie at linux, I've only fooled around with it a few times.

Actually, I've found out this is the driver I need

It is in tar.gz format. Where do I go from here?

Update:

I was just messing around with it again. Using linux dd, I was able to get to the img file in the download listed above. When I selected it, it said "unable to mount drive sda". So, next I went into the instalation and noticed as everything was loading, "loading: sata_promise driver" flashed up for a second. When I got to the part where I need to partition the hard drive, it said "No vailid devices found on which to create new partitions". I did previously create the partitions using partition magic 8.0. Also, I get the same error from disk druid and doing it automatically. Where do I go from here?

I was able to get my linux box converted from non raid to Raid using a promise fasttrak 100 card. I first had it running on one drive on the motherboard IDE controllers. I installed the Raid card and got the drivers from promise. I created a module and then created a ram disk img file that included the fasttrak module, scsi mod and such. I then moved the disk over to that controller. got it working with one disk.. then installed the 2nd disk and created a mirror.. I coped the first drive to the 2nd drive. the last step was to move the swap file over to the new location.. sda

I ran into more problems when I introducted a Emulex HBA to the linux box.. I have since got both working together now.

Thanks for the insight, however I am trying to dual boot on my already installed raid 0. I have been researching this online and discovered that it is a common problem. Although I believe I have found a way to do it, it involves things that are way way over my head such as hacking the kernel. For now, I am going to try and install SUSE 9.1, which the manufacturer has provided drivers for on their website. It is a little out dated, but since I am just trying to to learn linux at this point, its not such a big deal.
