I have a linux server (rh6.2) and sco 5.0.6 at seperate locations connected via dsl at both ends. I want to install a printer connected to the linux server (parallel port) on the sco server. The linux box telnets to sco to run software....this is why I want to install printer on sco. Both locations have dsl with linksys routers. Any suggestions???

buy something like a d-link DP101 tcp/ip printserver and add it to the network (you set them with an IP) then connect the printer, run rlpconf , tell it the printer name, and then the ip address of the printserver and you are up and running.

This gves you the ability to mintor the status of the printer from whichever site you happen to be at and also to print to it from anywhere too.

anyway I can do it without going on site????? By logging in???

Have you tried setting the printer up on the SCO box as a remote UNIX printer? If I'm understanding your question right, this shoud do the trick:

First set up the printer on the Linix box (be sure to NOT use a name already in use on the SCO box), and make sure the Linix box is defined in the /etc/hosts file of the SCO box.

Once you've done this, go into the SCO Printer Manager, Select Add Remote-UNIX. In the Add Remote window, tab to Select (Host) and choose your Linix box. If the connection is working, you should then be able to tab to Select (Printer), and the Printer Manager will pole your Linix box and find your printer. You should be able to do all of this from a telnet session, just make sure you have the right TERM setting on the telnet before you run the manager.

You'll have to look at the docs to tweak your setup because I've never had cause to do this before to help you with the details, but once it's installed you should be able to print to the printer from the SCO box, and the job will spool to the Linix printer.

I tried and it "fails to retrieve a list of printers" from the linux box. Do I need a specific port open on my router?????

After further investigation, it appears that being able to pool the remote server only works if the server is running SCO software, so just type the name of the printer on from the Linix box into the printer field and choose OK.

You don't need to do anything special on your router. The fact that you can telnet proves that both machines are able to talk to each other over the net, so you already have everything you need there.

You do, however need to make sure remote printing is configured correctly on the linix box, which I can't give you much help with because I'm not that familiar with your flavor of linix. You will need to add the SCO server to the linix /etc/hosts file (if you haven't done that already for your telnet setup). Also add the SCO server information to the /etc/hosts.lpd file on the linix box so your SCO server has permissions for remote printing.

If you need any more help with the linix setup, hopefully someone else on this forum who has worked with redhat linix will be able to help you there.

Thinking again about your router question, I suppose it is possible that the router on the linix end is blocking traffic originated from the SCO end like a firewall, but I doubt it. You can test and make sure this is not the case very easily.

Step 1: From the linix server open your normal telnet session and login as root.

Step 2: From the root command line on the SCO server, telnet back to the linix server. If you are able to get to the login prompt for the linix server then everything is ok on the router.
