Help installing Oracle8i Client

Please excuse my ignorance on this subject as I am a total newbie to Oracle- I was asked to install the Oracle8i Client on a W2k Pro system but it doesn't want to install. I installed it on my system and two others which are also running W2k Pro and it worked just fine. I thought maybe some program might be blocking the install, so I stripped the system down to the bare operating system and it still doesn't work. I want to use reformatting the system as a last resort, so any help would be greatly appreciated. If any other info is need, please let me know.
