I just purchased a Seagate Barracuda ST32550WC for my Sparc 5. I already have installed Solaris 8 on my sparc, but I didn't get the full installation in because my HD was too small. Now I have two hard drives, the other being a 1GB WD and the new one a 2GB barracuda.
At first attempt to reinstall Solaris 8, I was given an error message saying I had a 'bad magic number on disc label'. I got past this problem and think that it is erroneous since I used the same cd for installation last time. However, as the installation setup continued, I was tempted to take out the 1GB hard drive and only use the Barracuda for the install to see what would happen.
After about 10 minutes into the setup, I was given an error message saying that 'no hard drive was detected' and the installation stopped. I know that this is not true because when I used the probe-scsi command in the bios, it found all of the scsi devices without a problem.
I am wondering if I need to set some jumpers on this hard disk or not, since i just popped it in without bothering to do so. Also, I got this drive on Ebay and they did not specify it as a 'Sun compatible' but when i emailed them and asked if it would work with a sparc they said it would. The scsi connector is exactly the same as my original 1GB hard drive (the drive that works). Thanks for any help!!!!
