I want to setup a LAN in which 5-10 clients can login in to a Windows NT Server and gain access to one DSL Line. What I need to know is what I need if anything beyond the NT Server OS to accomplish this?

Also are there packages you can purchase that upgrade regular Windows NT to Windows NT Server?

Help?

if all you want done is sharing one dsl line, you can get this done much easier by setting up a soho router, i use a Netgear router and a 3com hub... works great for me with my dsl line... and i don't need to worrie about getting a nt domain setup for it...

products like this one are also provide a basic firewall via nat...

What is the difference between Windows NT Server and Windows NT WorkGroup? Can I use either for my LAN? I want users on their client machines to have to logon and all share one DSL connection. I must use NT, because I currently posses or can get everything I need. I want to know what will be the easiest to learn.

Errrr....

Watts, what exactly are you trying to accomplish? If you are trying to setup the beginnings of a company LAN, then an NT Server - Workstation setup is a good way to go. The server should have 2 NIC cards. One tied to a router/switch/hub that receives your DSL. The other tied to a switch/hub that serves your workstations. Those are just the basics, there is more behind it in setup, etc.

I hope this guides you along your path grasshopper... :) Jason Wilder

If you just want to network to have users access the internet, keep what you have and simply install a router as mentioned above. However, if you're going to network, it would be foolish not to implement file and print sharing, in which case you now need a Server - and with 10 users, I suggest NT (or 2000 Server).
