I want to connect two computers to one DSL modem. How do I go about doing that? (Cost effective if posible)

ISP --- DSL Modem --- ROUTER

Check out a computer store to compare different models / specs - I picked up a 4 port Belkin router for about £40.
DLink, Netgear, Belkin & Linksys all offer DSL home networking products.
Cisco offer high standard professional networking products - however these are normally (unsurprisingly) more expensive, and provide complex features a home user is unlikely to use.

you'll need to learn the basics of IP address allocation, subnetting, and basic networking.
will point you in the right direction.

Good luck <marc>[ul]help us help![li]please give us feedback on what works / doesn't[/li][li]not sure where to start? click here: faq581-3339[/li][/sup][/ul][/sup]

very true but.....

'cost effective'= ICS (internet connection sharing)

the host pc would need two ethernet cards installed and a 'cross-over' cable would connect to the second NIC and go to the 'client' pc. ICS is a feature of Windows 98se and after. "Jack of all trades. Master of none."

Depends what you mean by "cost effective". Also, are you looking for firewalling/nat.

I went for a linksys (£60) because it offered firewall, nat, vpn and it will self-configure to pick up the MAC address from the PC that your dsl modem connects to - enabling sharing across as many machines as you like (ports & hubs permitting)

2 IP addresses from ISP - DSL Modem - cheap hub/switch - two separate cables to 2 PC's

works for me

my ISP had a special offer, 2 IP address for every account
your ISP might charge you a few $/month but the solution is simple cheap and robust and you can turn off any PC and the other will still connect
