Hi All,

I have been trying to download linux (cable internet connection), but haven't been able to. I went to debian.org and they point to weird ftp sites. I was some how able to download these files using smartftp program. But these are folders again, with no .exe file..I donno what the extension of executable files are in lunix.

Please help.
Thanks.

I realized I even misspelled even Linux!! You can understand how confused I am right now!!

Thanks anyway.

I am trying to download debian linux from debian.org. I downloaded the full CD copy, it has some .iso files.

In what way do I have to burn them to CD so that it gets launched automatically on system startup?

Thanks for your help.

In your CD burning software, select that function called something like "Create CD from image file". Burn all the CDs that way.

The first CD will be bootable. If your machine can boot from a CD, configure it to do so, put CD1 into the drive and reboot the machine.

If your machine can't boot from a CD, look on the first CD in the set. You'll likely find a directory with instructions on how to create a boot floppy.

OK I will try what you just suggested.
Could you give a rough idea as to how many magebytes the entire download is? I am asking this because you mentioned that the first CD will be bootable..does this mean that the download will span on more than one CD?

If the directory listing here: ftp://ftp.rutgers.edu/pub/debian-cd/images/i386/ is to be believed, it's a total of 8 disks for a total of ~4.4GB. I do not know how much of that you really need.

Debian also gives you the ability to download the files you need via an app called "jigdo", which the Debian web site recommends.

yepp, this is what I have. One last question:- I haven't downloaded jigdo yet, is this also an iso file. and is it ok if I make a separate CD for all the eight iso files, will the system ask me one by one for them during installation.

I appreciate your help.
Thanks.

For Debian installs on machines with access to broadband, I recommend the Debian Netinstall. It's about 32MB worth of .iso to download. Then the installer will only download what you need during installation. You can get images from:
