I was hired by a company that has only worked as a fire, control and entry/exit install. They wanted to be able to bid ALL low voltage wiring. Thats where I came along. My job is terminating phone and data, as well as planning out and building the IT rooms.
In an effort to cross train all employees, the boss has asked me to give a short talk about voice/data cabling. The standards. UTP. The difference between CAT5 and CAT6. Riser and plinum cable. IEEE standards. Wire gages.
Can anyone give me a short lesson or point me to a web site that I can study up on?
Thanks

If you were hired to do this, you would think you would already be knowledgeable in this area.

You can do searches for different things you are looking for. "Cat5 terminations" would probably bring back several thousands on hits. This is how I put together training materials for my guys. I use one brand of cabling, so i go to their site for technical spec sheets, that sort of thing. Also look through older post for a lot of "how too's" that could help you put together something nice.

This link gives you bits of the actual TIA/EIA standards.

When is the last time you helped someone, just because you were able to?

For the best response to a question, read faq690-6594

NEC (National Electrical Code) look under Article 725. You may also want to check BICSI ( They are the authority on cabling technology. Site also has a plethora of cabling literature. I don't know where you're located, but Barnes & Noble may have network cabling books on the shelf.

These are laymen you will be presenting to. Keep the presentation at 5 - 10 minutes (that's one hour in layman time). Open the floor to questions, you may get one or two if everyone isn't already in a coma. Then voila, it'll all be over.

Bicsi is your best bet,and if this is what your going to pursue i would go ahead and become a member plus buy either a tdm manual or the certified technicians manual from them. however If you sold your Boss's on your abilities and you don't have already have the knowledge and experience to back it up, I would say quit now and pursue a career in sales because your definitely good at that. lol
