Every time I Try and access my secondary drive ( d drive) I now get an error that the drive is not formatted. I was downloading some music when this happened.

I remember first seeing all my mp3s disappeared form both my main c and d drive. Then anytime I tried to access my d drive I got the not formated error.

I have a lot of information that I do not want to lose so I don't want to just reformat if I don't have to. Any ideas?

I'm using XP Pro

thank you for your time

Just mp3s - ALL of them on both drives? what were you actually doing at the time/how did the disappearance manifest itself? (what made you realise all mp3s were gone?)

Have you up to date anti-virus/anti sppyware software?

Do you have goback installed? Overlay software?

lostmyplane,

While you can still see the drive as D:, go to the DOS Box and enter "chkdsk d: /r" this will check the drive and repair most file problems.

Pay attention to wolluf's post as the behaviour you posted is strange.

PostScript: As we all have huge time and energy investments in the information contained within our systems determining what info is not replaceable and/or difficult to replace is a start. Invest some time, energy and a few $ to backup those things we value. As there will be a time when you will lose access to some storage device. It is not a matter of "if" only when.

Please post back with progress

"I know everything..I just can't remember it all

I'm trying a program named getbataback to see if I can pull the data off my d drive. will let you know

I noticed the mp3 gone when I went to winamp to play some songs. yes the mp3s were gone from both hard drives. can't remember exactly what I was doing at the time. this was back in september when it happend. I went out and bought another hard drive and installed windows to it. I didn't want to reformat and lose data. I moved in september and started a new job. this is the first time I did something to try and recover.the data that I need back we're pictures of my son right after he was born. nothing that would keep me from doing day to day operations, but as you can probably guess, very important personaly.

getdataback worked except that all my mp3s are still gone. got back most all my pictures, mail, doc ect.

very happy to get back what I go, about 98% of my files

Just seem that a virus has got you. look at that link on symantec search for MP3, there is a lot of virus who "play" with the MP3 file on the disk they infected.
