Help getting started with graphs in reports

I am working on an app currently that requires a great deal of reports. One of the ways that we need to display the data is in chart form. For example we track cancelled surgeries and we have a report that gives the data numerically, but we also want to display it graphically with a bar graph. When I go through the wizard the sample report is nearly perfect, but when I hit finish it goes to sample data. I went through and formatted everything like I want, but it won't display the data for the bar graph. The row source is set just like I want and both the X and Y axis represent the correct things, but when I hit preview nothing happens. When I open the query builder in datasheet view it displays the correct data also. What am I doing wrong or not doing that I should be? Thank you in advance.
