help for small web site applet

I'm new in web design and need a html or php application which could navigate in many subdirectories and display small photos who could be look at in larger separate window on double clicking the small picture. If you know where I can find such pieces of html/php code that I can modify I will appreciate.

PHP would be server side, HTML client side, and an applet is Java. Are the images on the server or client computer? Have you tried Google (a programmer's best friend) to find something ready made?
