A lot of people in my organization travel frequently with laptops. They are starting to report that some hotels are no longer offering dial-up access. Instead they have something called direct-access. Our users buy their own laptops and many do not have ethernet cards.

First, has anybody else heard of this switchover in hotels or know more about what this means for laptop travelers? Is this "direct-access" a cable line or DSL?

Also, does anyone know a solution short of upgrading all of these laptops (hard to do since we don't own/control any of them)?

Thanks so much!

Howdy:

Direct access would appear to be some sort of broadband connection - either cable or DSL.. I would think cable as most hotels offer cable services in every room.

Only way around is to install NIC's in the systems..

PCMCIA 10/100 adapters of decent quality are often found for under $10. Sometimes for a lot less. I bought an SMC adapter last weekend for $4.99 at our local Micro Center.
