I'm new to Microsoft Project and would like some recommendations on books that are useful for beginners. My boss asked me to take over a PM role and though I have a very strong technical background, my PM skills are lacking. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Congee:

You have many challenges in front of you.

The least of your challenges is learning a new tool, MS Project. Learning how this tool operates is minor compared to learning Project Management.

Learning how to manage projects often takes years of experience, but unfortunately in our business, people are often handed a tool and expected to work miracles with it. All too often this is a recipe for failure. Just because someone knows how to make a cut with a surgeon's scalpel does not a surgeon make...

Rick39 listed some excellent websites that have general Project Management information. To those I'd like to add the Project Management Institute (PMI). Networking with other Project Managers is a great way to learn new things, and this organization has groups that meet regularly throughout the US. The PMI offers certification in Project Management (PMP - Project Management Professional) that is a globally recognized achievement:

For starters I would suggest that you ask your boss for training in Project Management as well as Microsoft Project. If that isn't possible, there are many books out there written for Project Management - the PMI website listed above has quite an offering of them.

One of my favorite books for Project Management is "Project Management - A Systems Approach to Planning, Scheduling & Controlling" by Harold Kerzner, Phd.

I have used Microsoft Project for 10 years, through many releases of the product. By far and away (in my humble opinion, of course) the BEST book for this product is published by QUE, and is "Special Edition Using Microsoft Project 2000" (or 2002, or ...) authored by Tim Pyron. It also includes a CD Rom. I basically taught myself how to use this product by reading Tim's books. (And no, I don't know Tim... but if he ever reads this... THANKS Tim!!)

Hope this helps you get started!
