I'm going to start an Intranet in my company and kinda new to mail server / client. Between Exchange server / Outlook Express as a client and Domino server / notes client, which one is easier for me as a newbie administrator to start towards those mail software regarding to the installation / setting administration and stuff? Is it true that Exchange 2000 with Windows 2000 surpassing Lotus Domino/Notes R5? Is there an online manual step by step installation for both? If it is, then which site i can find them? Maybe you can gimme some hints. Thanks in advance.

Anthony
adarma1@yahoo.com

I think the debate between Domino and Exchange will rage forever. However, I firmly believe if you are looking to get up and running on an Intranet you should consider the following:

What skills do you have / need for building the intranet?
For a Microsoft solution you will need: Exchange, Exchange Form Designer, IIS, Outlook Form Designer, VBA and other related internet skills. For a Lotus solution you will need: Lotus Domino and related internet skills.

As for the misinformation that Microsoft has been giving out about the Domino Vs Exchange situation I would take it as such, misinformation.

If you need a simple and scaleable approach to mail and intranet / internet solutions then choose Lotus Domino. If you want or have a vast knowledge of all the above Microsoft applications then Microsoft would be the solution.

I hope this helps.
i am definitely biased, so beware ;)

all things being equal, Domino beats Exchange hands down. it is _so_ versatile, secure, robust, expandable, reliable, etc. that in my mind there is even no comparison.

MS tends to misinform people, and Lotus tends to lag in marketing effort, so account for that as well.

good luck!

I used to work for Lotus. I now do Exchange administration. I also do Domino administration. I'm biased in both directions.

If you want straight-forward, easy to use, easy to administer, simple yet rich e-mail, Exchange is your answer. However, if you need good back-end connectivity, work flow, or mail integration with databases, you can't beat Domino.

Domino administration isn't easy. There is a lot to learn, and it can be frustrating. However, you can do some seriously cool things with the Lotus suite. Lotus also gives you a lot more in terms of server platforms. I'd never run my internet e-mail on an NT server. With Exchange, you don't have a choice.
