Our main file server (2003 R2 x64) has around 8tb of data on it.
We currently do the following:
One way replication to a DR box on the other end of our site.
Backup to LTO3 tape via a twin drive SAS attached library on the following schedule:
Mon-Thurs - Incremental
Fri - Full
Incrementals are kept for 7 days/1 full cycle.
Weekly fulls are kept for a month.
Monthly fulls are kept for a year.
Yearly fulls are kept indefinitely.
Whilst our backup window isn't causing us a problem, I'm conscious that each weekend we're backing pretty much the same 8tb of data as the change rate is quite low with incrementals being approx 60-70gb/day.
Whilst I don't want to put our ability to recover at risk, I'm interested what other people in a similar position are doing, and why?
For example tape cost becomes an issue and I'm thinking that (as an example) we could look at doing a full backup once a Month and set incremental backups to expire after a month and this would give us greater recovery granularity.
Someone suggested doing a monthly full, weekly differential, and daily incremental to cut down on the backup window and tape cost - not quite clear how this ties in with the retention rules on the storage policy?
