Hey, is there someone that knows how to stop certain programs from automatically starting up when starting up Windows 2000? The icons in the tray in the lower right corner (AOL, MS Messenger, etc.) must exist in a folder somewhere, yet I spent a ton of time looking for it and surfing the web for the answer.

According to Microsoft website, clicking "Start > Programs > Start Up should show these icons, yet for me they aren't there. I must be missing something, so your help will really be appreciated.

Thanks!

With AIM you can either click on setup or if connected preferences and scroll to on/off un check the 2 boxes below save password .
MS messenger should be the same as not letting it start up with windows

The tray icons are programs loaded at startup. If they are not in the Startup folder then they should be listed in the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

Just find the programs and remove the ones that you don't want to load at startup. Better export them before deleting, just in case.

one word of warning: DON'T DELETE/MODIFY ANYTHING IN THE REGISTRY THAT YOU'RE NOT SURE OF. ONE MISTAKE AND THE WHOLE WINDOWS WILL BE SCREWED.

Good luck

I reccommend using tuco7 method, usually somewhere in the preferences you can check/uncheck to load at start-up.

This is certianly true for AOL and MSN, If your not using MSN, open it like you would AOL, then click Tools or Options, then preferences..

If all else fails then you can edit the registry, tekuser999's method.

tekuser999 forgot to mention that it could also be placed here.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

To access the registry click START, RUN, then type 'regedit' without the qoutes.

ALWAYS BACKUP or EXPORT THE REGISITRY BEFORE MODIFYING IT.

YOU'VE BEEN WARNED...

Good Luck
