I am not normally a network person, so this all may be very novice-like. But I have been charged with configuring a program called Multi Router Traffic Graph (available at sourceforge) to monitor levels of internet traffic. The program uses SNMP to do its monitoring.

I have run into a dead end here b/c I'm not exactly sure which device I need to monitor to get just the amount of internet traffic. The most obvious answer would be the DSL modem, but I'm not sure that it supports SNMP. Although, I could determine that by experimenting if i knew how to get the IP Addresses of all of these devices, which I don't. Is there some general method of discovering the IP Addresses of network components? Anybody have any advice on what my target device should be?

You could just traceroute outside your network the 1st or 2nd hope will be your router.

Another way is to get a network scanner there are many different ones out there just search on google for one. Some will be more advanced than others and give you a better output. You could try network monitor trial from Fluke.

You will need a device that supports SNMP of course, your modem most likely doesnt, some DSL routers do but not all.

Of if the traffic is going through a server you could enable SNMP on the server.
