Today I started to boot up a Cisco 6500 running CAT IOS and as soon as it started to boot is says:

Autoboot: failed, BOOT string is empty
rommon 1 >

So I'm assuming there is not a boot file on this sup card. How can I go about getting another one. I'm not sure but I think I can upload the file from my PC using hyperterminal. Any help would be awesome. Thanks everyone.

What MSFC do you have? The boot system command is missing from your config. Try typing boot<cr> this will look in the sup-bootflash & then any flash cards for a boot image to boot from.

if there is no image on your sup-bootflash you will need to use an external card either pcmcia flash (Sup-2) or compact flash if a sup-720 or above. As long as you have one formated for the 6500 or a spare 6500 to format one in you can copy the code over and your away.

See if you have an image , try "dir sup-bootflash: or dir sup-disk0: and see if you have any image . We have seen right out of the box the boot commands are incorrect or the config register is wrong from the factory, should be 0x2102 . The image must be "sup-bootflash: or sup-disk0: . It cannot be in msfc bootflash as it will not boot from there . If you find an image add the statement "boot system flash sup-bootflash:<imagename>, them write mem it .

you need to do a command such as:

'boot system bootflash:'

or

'boot system bootflash:<imagename>'

and perform a copy run or write command..

this will set the boot variable.
