HELP - Accessing Data from a table

I'm just starting XML and I want to do the following:-

Display a simple table which list a group of objects and their price. When you click on the cell it extracts the object and price and appears in an alert box. I'm sure it's trivial for an expert - but not for me.
If anyone has some example code or just some advice on how to do it ..............
