We are using a Layer3 3550 series switch for the core network services and the 48 port 2950 series switches uplinked to it. We want to use the VLAN funtionality in all layer 2 switches to be able to route ip using the layer 3 switch between all the vlans. So my question is the uplink port from the layer 2 2950 series switch to the layer3 switch is added into the config this way?

switchport mode encapsulation dot1q
switchport mode trunk

Is this correct for question no 1 ?

Even though the layer2 switches are not layer 3 can the clients on each of those
switchport access vlan idhere

route through the layer 3 switch and between all the other layer2 cisco switches using the layer 3 as the core switch?

Thanks in advance.

Yep... Just make sure your using the same VLAN ID for each VLAN on all switches... You can ensure this by running VTP.
