I have a Compaq Presario 5304 running Win98 with 64MB of ram. The onboard sound card doesn't work anymore so I tried to install a Creative sound blaster 16 PCI card in it.
The computer only shutdowns to MS Windows 98 Splash sceen then stalls, when the card is in. It shutdown properly when the card is out.I have the newest ver. of DirectX and I have disabled the onboard sound card. Compaq says I have to send it in to get repaired and Creative has quit helping.

Start the computer in safe mode and go into device manager. Remove all drivers for your sound card. Shut down and install your sound card. Reboot and then insatll the new drivers for your sound card making sure that they are for win98.

If you have an internet connection, try to run Windows-update. Sometimes it works

Try to re-install win98 from your CD and then install the latest drivers from creative and then re-install directX.

Have you looked for the Win98 shut down patch. If your sound card drivers are new and you installed the card corectly the patch could solve your problem. I can't remember if windows update lists the patch or not. If it is not listed do a search on Microsofts website for win98 shutdown patch. There will be two patches one for general shutdown problems and one for computers with mapped network drives. Try the one for general shutdown problems. I had to install the patch on every win98 computer in my office. It works.
