Hello, I don't know what else to try. I have spent the last days on this, so maybe someone here can help me.

I have 3 computers (Windows 2000 on each).
They are connected thru a switch.
I can plugin the modem to the uplink port and computer 1 can go online. No matter what I try Computers 2 and 3 cannot go online. Unfortunetely I need Computer 2 to be online and not 1.

They can't go online when they are alone on the network nor nor when I plugin the modem directly to them.

I tried different cables (straight and twisted), I tried different ports, I tried automatic IP, different proxy setting, whatever.

I've installed a sencond Ethernet card in one of them and it does not work.

If it would work, Internet Connection sharing would be the next step.

I checked what's so different about Computer 1 but there's seems to be no difference.

I am thankful for any idea.

Well to start with you would need to give as little more information.

What software are you using?
What is the error you get on computer 2 when you try to connect?

I use Internet Explorer, but it doesn't work with Netscape and Opera also.

The strange thing is:
Computer 2 boots, recognizes the DSL Modem as a DHCP server, get its correct IP address and cannot go online though.

I have a 4th computer with Windows 98 and when I connect it to the hub it gets online immediately.

Thats a very large ip scheme for 3 pc's and a switch. Lets simplify things here. Make your router 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

the 1st pc 192.168.1.2/24 gateway 192.168.1.1
the 2nd pc 192.168.1.3/24 gateway 192.168.1.1
the 3rd pc 192.168.1.4/24 gateway 192.168.1.1

Setup your pc browsers for a LAN access.
ping from the pc's to the router to determine a connection.

I've seen a lot of Cable Modems that will plug into a network like that, but only allow a connection to the first machine they see.

Jeter asked "does the router have NAT?", and I'd be inclined to ask the same. I have a sneaky suspicion that it doesn't service more than one machine. This is not the end of the world if the machine that's connected is Windows 2000 Server (you can make the W2k Server share the internet connection with RRAS), but that would mean leaving that machine on all the time anyone wants to use the internet connection.

There are companies that sell little boxes that do nothing but act as a NAT to plug into a cable/_DSL modem to share the connection, but none of them spring to mind.

I don't know whether I made myself clear enough.

I can plug in the DSL modem directly to a computer and it recognizes the Modem as DHCP server and gets its IP addresses from it (like 10.11.5.161 and the subnet mask 255.255.0.0. I have no influence on that). BUT I STILL CAN'T get online.

I can plug it in to a second Computer with another Network card and it doesn't get online.

I can plug it in to a Computer with two network cards to the Network card number 2 and it doesn't get online.

I can plug in the DSL modem to the switch and it doesn't get online.

But then miraculously it works with another computer. It works directly AND thru the switch.

It seems to be a windows 2000 problem, since windows 98 works like a charm.

I was told by the Modem support that this is a known behaviour of windows 2000. That it suddenly stops working with DSL modems. Is that true? I have SP2 installed.
