Hello i am trying to search a field

Hello i am trying to search a field in a database to see if a certain substring exists i.e. re in fred or oh in johnny.

SELECT * FROM whatever where fieldinquestion='???'

Could someone point me in the right direction.

More of an sql question than perl, but I'll bite. Look at the LIKE operator in the WHERE clause:
