Hello everyone.

I have a IBM v7000. It has one large 4T lun and our VM enviroment sees it as one datastore. I am trying to explain to the powers to be why that is a bad idea and that we should have several smaller datastores rather than one large data store. I think I know why, but I cant seem to explain it to them.

Does anyone know of any good documents that explain this, or could offer me a simple emxplaination that no IT people would be able to digest.

Thanks,

Just tell them to think of it as a freeway. Only a couple of cars on the road, and you can move at the rate of the speed limit or faster. Toss more cars onto the road and you can still get the speed, but you can run into pockets of slow downs. Keep adding to the traffic, and things start to slow down due to congestion. Now the freeway capable of moving cars at 75MPh can only move them at 45MPh with the high volume of people on it. Then things get really bad when a whole bunch more cars want to use the roads. You run into grid lock and everything drops to a halt.

There is nothing "wrong" with a large Datastore such as yours, but there are wrong designs. If the plan is to host a couple of virtual machines on this large Datastore and the VM's will have very large virtual disks, then you are fine. If the plan calls for using this large Datastore to host many virtual machines, you run into disk contention issues (to many people trying to use the freeway).
