Hello all-

I am a website designer for a not-for-profit organization within Washington University in St. Louis.

Currently, my website features PowerPoint Presentation files (.ppt) for download. I made a hyperlink which links to the file. This works fine with MS Internet Explorer. Explorer will ask if you would like to open or save the file. If you select open, then IE will bring up PowerPoint, with the loaded file.

However, this does not occur with Netscape Navigator. Instead, the .ppt file comes up as scrambled text within the browser.

I realize I might not be able to expect Netscape to open PowerPoint, however I would like Netscape to query the user as to whether he would like to save the file. Does anyone know how to tackle this problem?

Thanks!

I think the part where Netscape queries the user is a browser setting set by the user. Not sure it can be manipulated on your end.

It's true that almost all MS Office products only work (or at least work well) with IE6.

Cheap and easy fix is to recommend that your users view the file with an IE6 browser on the page with the link to the PowerPoint presentation.

(p.s. - my experience with PPT and the web has been less than encouraging. PPT is a notorious resource hog. Unless you have an audio accompaniment, or you have to have the fancy transitions, a better way might be to do each page in Word, save the page as a webpage, and provide prev/next links at the top and bottom of each page.)

Hi mate,

If you can use Coldfusion, check out the following which will do what you want:

If you can't use Coldfusion but can use another server-side language, look into the content-disposition header.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the response-

I am using Microsoft FrontPage. What exactly am I looking for in the content-disposition header?

Thanks,
